Martyn Wild Welcome to our family discussion with Dr Martyn Wild.

I am really excited at the prospect of working together with Telstra as Family Champion for Ideas For Good.

So often we target our well-being messages and advice direct to children and young people, and often via schools to teachers and the kids themselves. But it is the family where we need to really spend much of our energies, as it is parents who hold the keys to their children's mental and physical health and well-being.

As a member of this blog you’ll be one of the first to know about any updates that are made to the Ideas For Good family initiatives. You’ll be kept up to date with any relevant articles and news stories dealing with issues facing the Australian family everyday. As always you’re invited to share your views and comments.

Buying bottled water? Think again..

I’d love to get your thoughts and responses to this well-crafted video – the story of your bottle of water.. It has certainly helped change my attitude to picking up a bottle of water in the local supermarket..

Shops into schools – what a brilliant idea!

The bleak nature of the economy in the UK is driving some really innovative thinking of late, with parents, teachers and other organisations coming together to set up ‘free schools’ in the many disused shops that are now lining the high streets of towns and cities across the country. Small business has taken the brunt [...]

When a 6 year old outsmarts eleven adults

A true story..
A container truck got stuck under a low-level bridge. Why? Well because the driver simply misjudged the clearance height, wedging the massive vehicle tight under the lowest part of the bridge. He tried reversing and also slowly moving forward, but nothing gave.
What did the driver do? Well, he did what most would probably [...]

It’s all about expectation

You know how the old joke goes..
Q: How do you improve your marriage? A: Lower your expectations.
Well, the same is true for children’s learning. If you have low expectations of what your child is capable of – at any age – then that is precisely what you get. Average results. Except maybe for the outspoken [...]

Is your child an online bully?

No parent will ever want to easily admit their child is a bully, whether online or in the ‘physical’ world. But if you do have an inkling that your child is bullying then you may well be able to do something about it. Rather than remain ignorant of what can be a very debilitating behaviour [...]

Most Australian parents believe video games have a positive effect on their children – are you one of them?

A new survey of more than 1000 Australian parents commissioned by video game maker, THQ, has found that 76% believe video games have a positive effect on their children.
South Australian children are the most active video gamers in the country, with 46% of children playing 1-2 hours a day, compared to 37% nationally. Victorian parents [...]

Texting – the new way to communicate..

As most of you with teenagers know all too well, text messaging has become their preferred means of ‘chatting’ with friends.
But a new survey from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project (http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2010/Teens-and-Mobile-Phones.aspx) illustrates just how far US teenagers have gone along this road, with 1 in 3 US teenagers now sending more than 100 texts [...]

Anzac Day – what a great opportunity..

As we prepare for Anzac day this year, what better time to have a discussion with your kids about what it means, why we celebrate (is that the correct
word?) the occasion and what it means to our national identity.
How do you feel about Anzac Day, what does it mean to your family?
In what ways do [...]

Another well meaning Net Nanny idea to control kids doomed to fail

I turned on the Today Tonight show yesterday (15 April) to find a story being run about Educateme, an application that aims to ‘give control of the computer back to parents’.
Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? A simple and not-so-cheap ($39.95) application that allows parents and carers to allocate the amount of time their children can have [...]

National conference addresses cyberbullying, a real issue for so many kids

I’ve just attended (and presented at) a really important conference, Friday and Saturday last week (9-10 April): The 4th National Centre Against Bullying Conference.
This national conference brought together a range of the world’s leading experts, along with government, industry and the education sector, to examine the latest research and strategies to address cyberbullying. It was [...]
